Beekeepers’ charity asks: Can Your Bees Give Back?

Bees for Development is calling on beekeepers to raise funds to help others through their passion for beekeeping.

The charity is running this appeal at a time when COVID-19 is causing unexpected consequences for people who already face severe poverty. There are now thousands more whose chances of making a living, raising a family and keeping children in school are much diminished.

“We must support struggling beekeepers, and introduce the benefit of bees to others who need a sustainable income having lost livelihoods elsewhere”, Dr Nicola Bradbear, Director at Bees for Development says.”Our partner organisations in Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda are continuing their work, and their services are in greater demand than ever before”.

Bees offer a lifeline for people who are struggling just to survive, especially in remote rural areas where bees often thrive. As one of Bees for Development’s partners in Uganda, Dickson Biryomumaisho, Director of The Uganda National Apiculture Development Organisation, says: “When it comes to the impact of COVID on people’s livelihoods in Uganda I can say this: the beekeeping sector will come through it. The bees still have plenty of forage, COVID or no COVID. We can give information and good training to the many, many people who need a COVID-proof boost to their falling incomes”.

Bees and beekeeping enable people to build a sustainable living, feeding their families while protecting biodiversity, too.
