Supporting Vietnam beekeepers to recover from devastating floods

Beekeepers in the very poor Province of Ha Tinh experienced terrible floods in October and November 2016. Livestock of all types were lost (bees, cows, pigs, hens) and people’s homes greatly damaged. Bee hives were swept away. People in this Province know beekeeping well, and rely on this source of livelihood.
They told us that if they could be assisted to replace their bees and equipment, they would be able to restore this source of livelihood within a few months. They are able to divide colonies and replace their enterprise. Beekeeping is one of the first enterprises that they can re-start quickly.
In December 2016 we launched an Appeal to help beekeepers in Ha Tinh. Generous beekeepers around the world kindly donated, and we were able to send £12,500 (US$15,770; €14,190). This enabled our partner organisation, the Vietnam Bee Research and Development Centre (BRDC) to provide 250 Apis cerana colonies and equipment to beekeepers in two communities most badly affected by the floods.
