Training for people with visual impairments
Beekeeping can be a valuable opportunity for people with disabilities, and should be an accessible livelihood for everyone. One of the main challenges lies in getting started, as people with disabilities are often marginalised and rarely given training opportunities, and have little or no support to help them take up training and practice for a length of time that will lead to expertise in beekeeping.
We are addressing this exclusion in a project, Beekeeping to Empower People with Disabilities in Uganda, run together with The Uganda National Apiculture Development Organisation (TUNADO), and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. In November 2019, we assisted Hive Uganda in training people with visual impairments, and their helpers, to set up apiaries and establish thriving colonies of bees. Photos from the session on Thursday 21st November can be seen in the gallery below. Every technique and method is geared towards making beekeeping as accessible as possible.
