When brood comb containing dead pupae was uncapped, the initial pale colour of the pupae changed to dark brown.  The head of a diseased pupa was usually raised and the proboscis was extended; the body was thin and dark.Virus particles, about 42 nm x 32 nm in size, were isolated from diseased pupae, and inoculation experiments established that the virus was the cause of the disease.
