Whole royal jelly and its ether-soluble fatty acid fraction, 10 - hydroxy - 2 - decenoic acid, when mixed with tumour cells for 10 minutes before inoculation, inhibited completely the development of transplantable Ehrlich carcinoma, and 1.0 mg of 10 - hydroxy - 2 - decenoic acid or 40.0 mg whole royal jelly per ml of cell suspension completely prevented tumour formation. The in vitro anti-tumour activity was exhibited only at pH below 4.5. Phagocytosis of mouse peritoneal macrophages after oral administration of royal jelly 10 - hydroxy - 2 - decenoic acid was significantly enhanced.
