Electron micrographs of the hypopharyngeal gland of Apis cerana workers showed that the walls of the intracellular ductules are composed of an inner, relatively dense, incomplete layer, arranged in circular bands so that it appears in section as plates of relatively dense material.  The tubules also have a middle granular layer as well as an outer, less well-defined membranous layer.  Hypopharyngeal gland cells possess a relatively large amount of endoplasmic reticulum and secretory masses; mitochondria, microvilli, and intracellular tracheoles were also observed.
