Sustainable beekeeping for resilient livelihoods

Making a difference worldwide

Natural resource management in Yisala, near Lake Tana

We know that having a healthy ecosystem underpins the wealth and well-being of rural people in Ethiopia. People rely on soils, water and natural vegetation for their livelihoods. Yet degradation is occuring at an alarming rate. In the Lake Tana catchment area deforestation is having a devastating impact on people's lives and on the welfare of bees, which rely on natural vegetation for forage.

Our ambitious plan is to help regenerate a hundred acres of forest, providing bee habitat, and to train young landless women and men in beekeeping, giving them a way to earn a living and to secure a better future.

This project is supported by Rowse through their Hives for Lives campaign.

In the images below you can see the condition of the site and the work we have been doing planting trees, fencing off the area to prevent cows from grazing and browsing, and building weirs to stop erosion in active gullies.
