Updated October 2007
Despite the continuing EU embargo, in the first half of 2007 Brazil exported US$12.6 million (€9.4 million) of honey, an increase of 1.7% on exported value during the same period of 2006. However the export of 1,110 tonnes in July was a 12% decrease compared with last year.
President of the Brazilian Association of Honey Exporters, José Henrique Faraldo, explained: “This decrease is due both to the European embargo and to the rise in internal consumption. During winter, the domestic market demand is greater. Since this market pays a higher value for honey, exporters direct their sales to the domestic market”. The price of honey has already started to rise on the foreign market. It went up to US$1.68/kg (€1.22/kg), a 5.7% increase on the same period in 2006.

Brazilian honey exports grew by 23% in 2006 compared with 2005, despite the EU embargo imposed on Brazilian honey in March 2006 . International sales exceeded US$23 million (€17 m). Shipments totalled 14,600 tonnes, an increase of 1.1% compared with 2005. Analysis shows that the 23% increase in the value of exports was due mainly to the great increase in sales to the USA, where sales in 2006 totalled US$17.33 million (€13.35 m). This corresponds to 74% of Brazil’s total honey exports.
