Fake honey warning

Fake honey warning

Giresun Beekeepers’ Union (GBU) President, Kubilay Elevli, said that Turkish consumers should be warned against fake honey, asking Imams to brief the public on the matter in Friday sermons. Following a tip off recently the gendarmerie seized three tonnes of the fake honey in the Keşap region of the Province. GBU sent samples to the Giresun Agriculture Bureau laboratories. “When we receive the test results, we will file complaints against these people, who have no compunction against jeopardising public health”, said Kubilay Elevli. “During Ramadan, some were selling honey outside mosques and because most were fasting they cannot taste the honey. We know this ‘honey’ is made from glucose and they sell honey normally worth between YTL 15-20 (US$10-14; €8-11) for only YTL5 (US$3.5; €3). Such sales usually take place in urban regions where inspection mechanisms are almost negligible. Kublilay Elevli asked people to beware of cheap honey and that local laboratories be set up to test honey. He said: “The list of registered honey producers should be constantly updated on the Internet. Municipalities should improve their inspection mechanism and veterinarians should be authorised to carry out regular inspections of bees. Only by increasing consumer awareness can this problem be tackled. Companies and individuals found to be producing fake honey were being fined and having their licenses revoked”.
