Why does Bees for Development provide information?

We know that there are a great many people in need of help and we do not discourage any effort to give people a helping hand out of poverty.

The never-ending need for donor help to provide equipment has strengthened our belief that information is valuable and powerful. We believe equipment can either be:

(1) Made by the beekeepers themselves, using simple materials and methods

(2) Bought by the beekeepers themselves, either with money earned from honey sales or other sources

(3) Bought by beekeepers who are assisted by micro-finance schemes.

Provision of equipment by donor projects sometimes has the effect of creating dependency or artificially forces up local prices of inputs as donors are doing the buying and not the end users.

We, almost entirely, focus on the dissemination of information and knowledge which leads to greater long term sustainability. We do this by publishing and disseminating Bees for Development Journal every quarter, plus many other activities including project management and training.

Over 95% of the recipients of BfD Journal are in developing countries and cannot afford the subscription. Therefore not only do we have to raise funds to produce the Journal, we also need income to sponsor subscriptions.
