Threats to Malaysia's Bee Trees - Take action

To support action to reduce the loss of tualang trees and the decline in Apis dorsata populations send this message to the Editor of the Star Newspaper at edt@thestar.com.my

“We are disturbed to read the report of Malaysia’s remaining tropical forest ‘bee trees’ being injured and even felled. These trees are home to colonies of Apis dorsata honey bees – we do not know the population sizes of these bees, but assume that they are much reduced due to habitat loss in Malaysia. The best protectors of these bees and their trees are the honey hunters whose livelihoods have depended upon them: a close and unique interdependency between bees, trees and humans. Ten years ago, bee enthusiasts from around the world travelled to Pedu Lake to witness honey harvest from exactly the tree that is now damaged. The biology and behaviour of these bees is little known, and rich cultural traditions are also associated with these bees and their trees. Please do not destroy them”.
